The Importance of Keywords in Your Articles

from: Glenn Cutforth

Keyword density and placement is an important strategy for optimizing your articles to attract search engines. Search engine spiders scan a page in a way that makes it important to place your keywords where they will be detected and recognized as a keyword, so that your article will show up when someone searches for that keyword.

What is a Keyword?

A keyword is a word that is placed regularly throughout your article that is a word used by people to seach for specific information using search engines. When a search engine spider sees the word you've placed several times in an article, it will determine that your page may be useful to users who are searching with that same keyword.

Over Optimizing Your Articles

It's important to be careful not to over optimize your articles for particular words, a practise known as "keyword stuffing". When you stuff keywords into an article, the search engie spider will realize that you're trying to trick it into placing your article high in the search results for that word, and will, instead penalize your site and your page. Keyword stuffing could even affect the rankings of your other pages or get your site blacklisted from a particular search engine if they discover you're repeatedly keyword stuffing.

What is Keyword Density?

Keyword density is how many times your keyword appears in your article. You can determine density by a percentage to determine how many times to put a keyword in an article. For instance, if you have a 500 word article and want to achieve a keyword density of 5%, then you'll need to have the keyword in your article exactly 25 times. You can find hundreds of resources and guides recommending one keyword density over another and the reasons for this, however, you'll have to determine for yourself what density percentage is the more profitable for your articles. As long as you don’t over optimize and you're making enough profit from your rankings, then you can choose whatever keyword density suits your purpose.

The Right Density

Regardless of the exact density you decide to use, it's important to place keywords so there are more at the beginning and end to produce a sort of hour glass effect. Having the right keyword density in your article gives it a better chance to make money from that article because it will continue to get a higher ranking in search engine results and, therefore, seen by more people.
