My name is Glenn Cutforth and I'm a writer, editor,
graphic/book designer and general jack-of-all-trades when it
comes to the publishing business. I've owned and operated
Zxmaxx Communications, a traditional print publisher, in
London, Ontario Canada since 1997 and have also taken on
numerous design projects for many clients since 1981.
In the summer of 2004 I finally determined that the future
of publishing was developing eBooks for the mass Internet
audience who devour information like no other time in history.
With the costs associated with traditional print publishing
continuing to skyrocket, and the realization that many, many
authors with quality books will never see the light of day
through this distribution system, I set out to change my
publishing business model.
Like all "newbies" I struggled to discover the proper way
to go about doing business on the Internet and for the first
six months or so I went around in circles as I tried to move
from a print publisher to an eBook and Info Product
developer.
You know the deal ... buy every "secret revealed" eBook out
there only to discover it's not so much a secret, but just
good business sense that anyone who has owned a business of
any kind already knows. However, I also realized that
gathering this information was part of the process and in the
end, I discovered the light at the end of the tunnel.
My "eureka" moment came when I concluded it wasn't about
"secrets" but about "systems" and "focus" and "automation" and
"list building" and so on. Put together the right step-by-step
system and anyone can make a good part time and even full time
living developing Information Products to distribute over the
Internet.
Doing business, online or offline is still all about
providing good products and providing great service. It's also
important to be courteous, polite and responsive with
prospective customers. These rules apply no matter which
environment your business operates in.
However, the big difference in doing business online is how
much more profitable it can be. I closed down my unprofitable
offline publishing business that cost $5,000 a year to rent
office space, $6,000 per year in advertising costs and when
you added up all the other costs, including the costs of
paper, printing, postage, shipping, storage, employees ... it
was a lot of work for very little return.
When I realized I could "own" a domain name for about $8
per year and "rent" my web space for about $300 per year, it
didn't take me long to pack up my offline office space and
move it into my den and start the process of "making a living
online."
So here I am. I've developed many websites over the
past few years and all of them combined cost a fraction of
what I used to pay just for rent. I can do all the work
myself, however, there are many talented freelancers out there
who can do the stuff that I don't want to do.
And so, my goal now is to help anyone who has a desire to
get out of the "rat race" to make that same transition from a
regular job to perhaps doing something with their desire to
find a better way through information publishing. The place to
start is to evaluate your talents and determine whether you
have the desire and temperment to work for yourself.
I realize that one of the biggest problems faced by most
online "newbies" (people just starting out) is the
confusion caused by following too many different so called
"gurus". It does take time to find your way through the
confusion.
