Top Tips on Communicating with People on MySpace.com
from: Glenn CutforthMySpace is the perfect communicating tool for those looking to reach out. The web-based social networking service provides folks from all different walks of life with the opportunity to manage a personal profile, through which they can share video and photos with friends and family, meet their friends' friends, and network with business associates. The website has become extremely popular -- it is currently rated as the third most popular website in the United States. Over 100 million people have joined the free service, and nearly 250,000 new people join daily. With all of these potential contacts, you may be looking for some tips on communicating with people on MySpace.com.
The first tip to consider when communicating with people on MySpace.com is to be extremely careful when providing people with information about how to personally contact you, such as your address, phone number, physical hangouts, IM (instant message) screen name, etc. Remember that your profile and the MySpace.com forums are public places.
Second, remember that people aren't always who they say they are -- and they certainly don't have to be honest on their MySpace.com profile. While it's fun to meet new people on MySpace.com, be careful about adding strangers to your friends list, as this gives them closer access to you. Be extremely cautious when making plans to meet a stranger or a new friend in person. So far, seven men have been arrested in conjunction with a rape and robbery that took place when a woman planned a meeting with the men she had met on the MySpace website.
Third, think carefully before making a post. One of the major issues with MySpace.com -- and any other virtual venue -- is that the distance afforded by the Internet emboldens members to share too much of themselves. Don't post something that will embarrass you or get you in trouble with your parents, boss, or teacher! Similarly, put forth an image on MySpace.com, on your profile, in your messages, and in your blog, that represents you well to others.
Fourth, remember that many people don't communicate well in writing. Oftentimes, what you read isn't at all what a person meant to say. Before becoming confrontational, clarify what you friend actually meant to say. Likewise, take the time to read your messages and comments before posting them. Be sure you're saying what you actually mean.
Fifth, be a responsible member of the MySpace.com community. The community can only be as good as its community members make it. Don't put up with put-downs, harassment, or threatening comments. Let people know you're uncomfortable with such comments, and, if need be, report inappropriate comments to MySpace.com. There are about one dozen moderators in charge of monitoring all of MySpace.com's activity -- for over 100 million users. MySpace relies on its users to self-police, notifying the company when policies have been violated. Become familiar with MySpace.com's Terms of Service and Privacy Policy so that you are aware when these policies are being broken.
Finally, for many people who have difficulty interacting with people face to face, MySpace.com provides a venue for practicing social interaction. If you're normally shy, take advantage of your relative anonymity and open up a little. You may discover the more you practice on MySpace.com, the more you're able to open up in real-life situations.
Most of all, enjoy interfacing with people who are different from you, people you may not normally come into contact with -- they may help you learn a few things about yourself. Indeed, many of the world's past and present thinkers believe that a little connectedness will bring our world a long way.
