Like-minded People Use the Groups Function on MySpace

from: Glenn Cutforth

MySpace describes itself as “a place for friends” and, with over 100 million members and nearly 250,000 new members daily, MySpace isn’t short on popularity. It's most popular as a place for like-minded people to meet, share ideas, photographs, and videos, and to introduce their friends to other friends. It has also become a haven for both amateur and professional artists, who enjoy sharing their art in an accessible format in which they can also receive feedback. The wide array of people with different interests, backgrounds, and ideas is simply mind-boggling. If you are looking to discuss issues, share ideas, or ask questions to like-minded people, the Groups Function on MySpace may be just the place for you.

You can reach the Groups Section of MySpace via the company’s homepage. Simply find the Groups link along the top toolbar. You don’t need to join MySpace to view the listing of groups on Myspace, although you must join in order to respond in the groups. Once there, you'll find a listing of the MySpace Groups by category. There are a total of 39 group categories, including the following diverse subjects: Business and Entrepreneurs; Cities and Neighborhoods; Cultures and Communities; Family and Home; Business and Politics; Literature and Arts; Hobbies and Crafts; and Money and Investing. On the MySpace Groups homepage, you'll also find ways to manage your group memberships. You can form your own group, view a listing of groups to which you belong, and search for group keywords.

The number of individual groups within each of these categories is absolutely mind-boggling; there is no doubt that anyone could find a place to meet like-minded people using the groups function on MySpace. For example, the Automotive category has a total of 41,858 distinct groups, the Schools and Alumni category is home to 158,485 individual groups, and the Fan Clubs host an unbelievable 199,054 groups.

Once you’ve chosen a group category to explore, you then, as discussed above, have thousands of choices. The Family and Home category is host to 3,000 individual groups, ranging from Young Mothers seeking like-minded company to Pregnant and Waiting to the Single Parents Club. Within the Pets category, you'll find groups committed to stopping cruelty again animals, folks who love dogs, and those who enjoy showing their horses.

The groups can be private or public, a setting chosen by the group’s founder. You must be invited to join private groups. You'll find that the groups are frequented by an enormous number of people -- the Dogs are the Best group has over 33,000 members. By clicking on a group, you can determine its membership type (public or private), its founding date, location, group leader, and number of members. You'll also find a button for joining, as long as the group is open to public members.

There’s a link for the group’s photos as well. Each group has a listing of different forum topics. Forum topics for the Dog Lovers range from discussing tail docking to meals for dogs. The individual group pages also have a place for members to leave bulletins. Bulletins are short messages related to the group’s topic. While you don’t need to be a MySpace member to read a group’s forum postings, you must sign up in order to see the bulletin contents. And, of course, you must be a member in order to interact within the groups.

With thousands and thousands of groups, you are bound to find a gathering of like-minded people using the Groups Function on MySpace.
