In the early days, (meaning the early 2000s) when
digital products started a revolution of sorts, the Internet
was flooded with a lot of poor quality eBooks that were
slapped together by authors who had little concern about
anything but making money. This has changed to a large extent
as buyers of these products started to demand higher quality
and substance before they paid out their hard earned cash.
In my experience, there are still a lot of badly written
& formatted and poorly designed eBooks and digital
products out there, but the quality has risen as technology
has made it easier for anyone to develop products for low
production costs. Adobe's PDF format has become the format of
choice because it services both PCs and Macs, while the .EXE
format is slowly disappearing due, in part, to the habit of
virus developers using this format to infect computers
throughout the world.
Many people starting out on the Internet find that the
easiest way to get up and running is by purchasing "Resale
Rights" to a product that was developed by someone else.
Sounds like a good idea, doesn't it. By purchasing "Resale
Rights" you have no research, development or design costs. You
have an instant business if you know how to purchase a domain,
set up a website and automate your payment processor, and best
of all, unlike selling Affiliate Products, you get to keep all
the profits. Can't go wrong, can you?
Unfortunately, the downside will depend on how many other
people have purchased the same "Resale Rights" product and how
well they go about marketing the product. Statistics show that
ninty percent of the people who purchase the "Resale Rights"
to a product never actually do anything with them. So, that
eliminates most of the competition.
However, if it's a popular product, chances are dozens of
other "high profile" resellers with large lists of customers
will get most of the business. That doesn't mean you can't be
successful with the same product, it just means you may have
to work a little harder to distinguish yourself from everyone
else.
There are several ways you can make this happen. First,
take a good look at the sales letter and make certain you give
it a good rewrite. Many of these products have mediocre sales
copy at best, and there are likely many ways you can enhance
the sales pitch.
Another way is to put together your own collecton of
bonuses. When you do this, it separtes you from the crowd and
makes the product's perceived value higher. You may also
consider having your own graphics (book cover, header, buttons
etc.) created to, once again, distiguish yourself from
everyone else and even do some editing to the text if you have
the original source document. This is especially true of
products that came from the Public Domain. With this type of
product, you can edit to your heart's content.
Here's a quick look at what you own with different
rights:
Resale Rights: This means you have the right to resell the
product and keep all of the profits. However, there are two
distinct types of resale rights.
Basic Resale Rights: If you purchased
"Basic" rights, you can sell the product, but you cannot sell
the "Resale Rights" to your customer.
Master Resale Rights: You can sell the product to your
customer along with the "resale rights" which means your
customer can also sell "resale rights" to their customers.
Sometimes Master Resale Rights are bundled with the product
and sometimes they are sold separately.
Branding Rights: You can make limited
changes to the product such as including your logo, ads,
website URL and Affiliate links.
Give Away Rights: Many authors forbid you
from selling a product for less than a specific amount to
maintain the value of their product. However, some products
are specifically created to be given away. Often these are
short reports that have Ads and specific Websites that are
being promoted and the whole idea is to give away the eBook to
promote a specific author or publisher or website. This is
called "Viral" marketing and it is a very effective way to get
your name and products out to the Internet very quickly.
Private Label Resale Rights
As I
mentioned, there are many ways you can get a steady supply of
very high quality Resale Rights products if you are ready to
begin developing your own digital empire. These membership
sites are highly recommended, but as with anything else, it's
important that you put your own personal stamp on the products
you receive, otherwise, you'll just end up getting lost in the
crowd.
Keep in mind, many of these sites will sell only a limited
quantity of memberships, so if you are interested, please
check to see if they are still taking new
members.
